Ancient Maya Through U.S. Eyes, lecture by Richard Leventhal
Time:
5:00pm
Location:
Rainey Auditorium, Penn Museum
In the mid-nineteenth century, ancient Maya civilization was first presented to the Western World in the travel books of John L. Stephens. Ever since, explorers, archaeologists, and epigraphers of the Mayas have been mainly American, whereas Mexican researchers have focused on ancient Aztec culture. Penn archaeologist Richard Leventhal examines the tight and fascination connection between Maya culture and that of the U.S. travelers who “discovered” and studied it.
A program of the 2006-2007 Penn Humanities Forum on Travel. Cosponsored by the Penn Museum.
