Penn Museum: Year of Egypt: Hollywood on the Nile Free Film Series: Cleopatra (1934)
Time:
1:30pm
Location:
University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, 3260 South Street, Philadelphia
The first Sunday of each month, through May, the Museum screens blockbuster films offering a look at Egypt through the eyes of Hollywood. Claudette Colbert, Warren William, and Henry Wilcoxon star in the 1934 classic, "Cleopatra," directed by Cecil B. DeMille. In 48 BCE, Cleopatra, facing palace revolt in her kingdom of Egypt, welcomes the arrival of Julius Caesar as a way of solidifying her power under Rome. When Caesar, whom she has led astray, is killed, she turns to Marc Antony and seduces him in the infamous "barge scene."
