Travel for Humanity, Symposium
Time:
4:00pm
Location:
Rainey Auditorium, Penn Museum
 |
On the face of it, the virtue of international aid would seem self-evident: the privileged West providing expertise, goods, technology, and money to people in need. And yet, one of the many perplexities surrounding globalism is the controversy surrounding these humanitarian efforts. Crossing borders to bringe change–however much desired–may be construed as a form of cultural/political invasion. The distinguished members of this symposium consider the ethics of international adoption, medical aid, and governmental advising when it comes to Travel for Humanity. Joining them will be the student winner of the PHF-Weiner Prize for Best Undergraduate Essay on the ethics of humanitarianism in a globalized world.
Peter Conn: International Adoption
Harvey Friedman: Penn Medical Aid to Botswana
Brendan O’Leary: Political Advisor to the Kurds
PHF-Weiner Essay Contest Prize Winner: Ethics of Global Humanitarianism
A program of the 2006-2007 Penn Humanities Forum on Travel.
