Penn Museum: Day-long Conference on Chinese Art: New Directions in Yuan Painting
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm

Following a keynote lecture, “Yuan Painting, the Last Fifty Years,” ten senior scholars discuss their current research on this extraordinary century of Chinese art (1267-1368 CE). In conjunction with the conference, Penn Museum hosts a one-day showing of five Yuan period paintings from a private collection and four of the Museum’s own paintings. The conference is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.

Penn Museum: Family Workshop: Decorative Dashiki
Time: 10:00am - 12:00am
Location: University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, 3260 South Street, Philadelphia
Families can decorate a Dashiki skirt to wear or give as a gift. Dashikis, similar to Boubou or Sarongs, originated in West Africa, and were originally hand-woven and dyed, and often highly decorative with embroidered features. After an inspirational visit to the African gallery, participants carve stamps out of root vegetables and hand stamp Dashikis with geometric shapes, animals, or any design imaginable! Craft recommended for ages 7 and above. $10 per person ($5 Museum members). Registration includes museum admission. Pre-registration required: 215/898-4016.

Penn Museum Year of Egypt: First Saturday Tour: The Everyday Life of Egyptian Peasants
Time: 11:30am
Location: University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, 3260 South Street, Philadelphia
This Year of Egypt, take a thematic tour of Penn Museum’s ancient Egyptian galleries with an Egyptian scholar and Pennsylvania Chapter member of ARCE (American Research Center in Egypt). This morning, Vanessa Smith, PhD candidate in Egyptian Archaeology, University of Pennsylvania, presents "The Everyday Life of Egyptian Peasants." Tours are offered the first Saturday of each month, September through May. Free with Museum admission donation. First Saturday tours leave from the Trescher Main Entrance. (Please note: this is in addition to Education Department docent-led tours, most Saturdays and Sundays at 1:30 p.m.)

Penn Museum: Theatre-in-the-Galleries: Vagabond Acting Troupe

MULTIPLE AFTERNOON PERFORMANCES AFTER 1 P.M.

After winning Barrymore Award recognition for its collaborative venture with “Three Worlds Intertwined” at Penn Museum in 2004, Vagabond Acting Troupe returns for three weekends of exciting, interactive, family-oriented theater-in-the-galleries. This time, the Troupe takes Museum visitors back, back, back in time to ancient Egypt, and the Amarna Period—where some ancient Egyptian gods, banished to make way for a single deity known as the Aten, are not happy. This original short theater program, designed to complement the new Amarna exhibition, runs multiple times throughout the day. Lower Egyptian gallery. Theater-in-the-galleries is made possible with funding from the Connelly Foundation, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, Samuel S. Fels Foundation and Thomas D. DeSanto. Free with Museum admission donation.

Spend an afternoon exploring Penn Museum's galleries. Guided tours are offered to the public at 1:30 p.m. most Saturdays and Sundays late September through mid-May. Tours leave from the Trescher Main Entrance admissions desk and are free with Museum admission donation. Tour topics are subject to change without notice. Cancellation of scheduled tours may occur. <BR>
